Seoul

Seoul is the largest city in South Korea and is of course the country’s capital It is home to around ten million people, with more than 25 million (around half the country’s entire population) living in its greater metropolitan area.

In its history, the city has in fact been known by many other names, including Wiryeseong, Hanju and Namgyeong. It is thought that the name Seoul - which it became known as in 1945 after the country’s separation from Japan - comes from the Korean Seorabeol, meaning capital city.

Because of its large population and relatively small area, Seoul is home to many high-rise buildings. Yet you’ll be hard-pressed to find one with a fourth floor - the number is usually left out (going straight to five, or having a ‘floor 3b’) because the number is said to be extremely unlucky.

The city grew over many centuries because it is situated on the Han River, which was used as a trade route to China. However, the river is no longer used in such a way because its estuary is at the border between North and South Korea.

Taxis in Seoul are colour coded; white and grey cars are basic, whereas black cars are more luxurious and tend to have better drivers!

It isn’t particularly unusual that the vast majority of restaurants in Seoul will deliver straight to your door. However what is pretty unique is the fact that meals are often delivered on plates and with a full cutlery set which you can leave outside your door after you’ve finished eating for the delivery driver to pick up later!

Strangely, the word Seoul cannot be written in Chinese - there are no matching characters! Because of this, the Chinese refer to it by a similar-sounding but not exact-same name.

In some classrooms in Seoul, you will find robot teachers that use voice technology to help Korean children with their speaking skills!

In not just Seoul, but in South Korea as a whole, your blood type is said to determine your personality. Although this belief in fact originated in Japan, it is most firmly entrenched in South Korean culture. People with Type A for instance are said to be punctual, whereas Type Bs are lazy - but creative!

In Seoul, citizens suspected of committing serious crimes are sometimes forced to take part in crime re-enactments, to which the media are invited as well as being advertised in local newspapers so the public can turn up.
